New Stikkit Package
The New Stikkit Package is a collection of utilities which allow you to quickly and easily add new “stikkits” to the Stikkit.com service. (Read more about Stikkit right here!)
This package includes…
An application so you can add new Stikkits right from your dock!
An AppleScript which you can launch thru the Script Menu or your favorite alternate script launcher
You can use the scripts with LaunchBar or Quicksilver so that you can seamlessly add new Stikkits without even leaving your current context
Perhaps most excitingly, it also includes a “Make New Stikkit” service, so you can send text to Stikkit from within any application that supports services!
You may use any or all of the components of this package individually.
Feb 1: Updated to support the official, final, Stikkit API.
This package is released under the GPL and is free of charge!

Errors when posting
I’ve gotten two different errors while trying to use this script. Here they are:
New Stikkit Encountered an Error URL Access Scripting got an error: An error of type -1 has occurred. number -1 while sending data to Stikkit
New Stikkit Encountered an Error URL Access Scripting got an error: An error of type 71 has occurred. number 71 while sending data to Stikkit
Any ideas?
Re: Errors when posting
Zach, those errors are coming from the actual post attempt to Stikkit. My guess is that you have an invalid API key or else the Stikkit website is having problems.
very useful
these are really useful, thanks!
Source?
Nice work.
Is the source code available? Presumably it is, since you’ve released it under the GPL.
Also, is there any more to the API than posting a new stikkit? Even that functionality seems to be undocumented, at least as far as I can find. Is there more hiding somewhere?
Re: Source?
The applet, script and service all use the same source code. Just open the applet or script in Script Editor and you can check it all out.
The API is currently 100% undocumented. I based it on an example script that Stikkit’s folks posted in their forums.
problems with german umlauts ö, ä , ü
when i post german stikkits via Quicksilver that have umlauts, they arrive scrambled … guess it is the charset …
oh, and how do i create a stikkit with a new line? Sometimes it works by hitting return, sometimes it doesn’t.
Otherwise GREAT package!
Re: problems with german umlauts ö, ä , ü
Yeah, the script doesn’t support unicode at this time. Would be nice to have, but I think I’ll wait for Stikkit to nail down their API (and document it!) so that I can figure out what to send to ‘em, character encoding wise.
As for new lines, try two returns instead of one. That might be more reliable.
Errors when posting
First of all, fantastic job in putting this together! I’m having a very odd occurrence, though, and wonder if you have any ideas where I’m running into trouble. Every second attempt to use the script to make a stikkit seems to work fine (that is to say, it works once, doesn’t work once, works again, doesn’t work, etc); the error message I get when it fails is ‘New Stikkit Encountered an Error URL Access Scripting got an error. An error of type -31040 has occurred. number -31040 while sending data to Stikkit’
I’ve tried to reset the API, but the problem seems to persist, and I’m baffled by the fact that it seems to work half the time. Any ideas? Thanks very much, and keep up the fantastic work!
I was having the same error
I was having the same error with the -31040 error every other time when posting. I thought that maybe the first run of the script somehow left URL Access Scripting in a state where it was still running but not in the right state to accept another AppleScript command. When a second run of the script sent the still-running instance more input, it would throw the -31040 and bail, allowing the next run of the script to start a new instance which would work. All of this is hypothesis, of course, and I must stress that I am not an AppleScript guru by any stretch.
Looking around, I saw that a few scripts go through the trouble of telling URL Access Scripting to quit once they’re done with it (see, e.g., http://db.tidbits.com/article/05396). So I put the line:
Immediately before the line
and this error has stopped. YMMV.
P.S.
to iNik: The script is great! Thanks for all of your work on it.
-31040 error
John’s fix above worked great for me. Should probably be rolled into the package. Thanks!
forwarding mail with attachment
this package is fantastic — thanks! quick question — is there anyway to forward my email from mail app to stikkits so that the attachments stay linked or connected?
thanks
Re: forwarding mail with attachment
Nope, that’s impossible. Stikkit can’t store files.
The -31040 fix
Adding the line “tell application “URL Access Scripting” to quit” fixed my issues as well.
AWESOME! Works great. Thanks
AWESOME! Works great. Thanks so much. This is the missing link for Stikkit access.
