Hey. Just read the article and I figured out how to do it in Windows.

Go to your “Program Files\iTunes\iTunes.Resources\en.lproj” folder (or whatever language you use).

Make a backup of the file named “Localizable.strings”.

Open up the “Localizable.strings” file in a text editing program that can edit unicode text (I used Metapad) to replace the word Podcast with the word Netcast.

Save the file as it’s original name “Localizable.strings”, and you’re done.

Now just run iTunes and you should see all references to Podcasts are now Netcasts.

Note: This doesn’t change the word Podcasts in the iTunes Store, as it just basically downloads the whole iTunes Store page from their servers.

I did have problems on the Mac when I did a global find & replace, and the subscribe/download buttons in the Podcast/Netcast view became blank. Are you seeing the same thing?

I got it to work with windows. I’m glad you all are taking steps to give podcasting a new name. I too agree with the name “netcast”. Thanks for the helpful tip.

I downloaded Metapad and attempted an update to the localized strings. When I opened the file in metapad, I got a warning about non-ascii characters in the unicode file. So I chose not to try modifying the localized strings. Is it actually safe to do so regardless of the warning?

Anyone know a way to hack the ipod so that it says Netcast?

when i synced my ipod after installing this hack, my ipod now shows netcasts instead of podcasts. I’m using a 3rd gen touch wheel ipod.

Very nice… The text on the buttons disappears in the Windows version as well when a global replace is done. This can be avoided though. I went through the file and searched for “podcast” one instance at a time and changed only the ones that appear between quotes. This prevents the text on the buttons from disappearing. It looks like there are some variable names in this file that are being referenced and changing them breaks that link. I did notice that “Podcast” still shows up on the General tab in the preferences menu, even when doing a global replace…

Great work! It’s amazing what you can change in a simple strings file. Though I don’t agree with the whole Netcast v Podcast thing, this is a nice thing to do for the netcast aficionados.

aluminu did give me an idea. I started off doing a find&replace for “Podcasts” (with the quotes).
I then later wanted to narrow it down exactly to the right one(s)

This is for iTunes 7.0.1. Older versions can find the same things as well, just look under the section name I give before the actual line.

There are many other places where to find “Podcasts” but I didn’t think they were important enough, that and I wasn’t sure what they did. There are few dialog box texts that you can also change podcast(s) to netcast(s), like when you remove a podcast it says “Are you sure you want to remove the selected podcasts from the list?” you can change that as well. But changing every where it says podcast(s) to netcast(s) can have a strange effect.
